Bedrock For A Church On The Move

by Merwyn S. Johnson, Bedrock For A Church On The Move Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Bedrock For A Church On The Move books, This book addresses the current turmoil in American Christianity and culture. The Church is at a crossroads, often trapped by its own message. Only Jesus Christ can provide bedrock for such a time as this. American Christianity has boxed itself in at two crucial points. (1) The message of salvation, including the afterlife, typically focuses on Jesus dwelling in our hearts to make us good, make society good, and through us make others good. This message raises tough questions from within. If we do not feel Jesus in our hearts, is God still there? Are we still saved? Is it finally up to us to make ourselves good? Where, then, does God fit in? (2) Many American Christians set up a distinction between the Church as the place where God dwells and the World as a secular place without God. Does our World now confidently embrace secularism? If so, how do Christians--and the Church--fit into such a World? On both fronts, the Church now faces a crisis of authenticity, relevance, and community. The true Christian bedrock, Jesus Christ, offers new directions for moving forward. When the message shifts from claiming that Christ is in us to affirming that we are in Christ, the emphasis changes from embodying God in ourselves to participating in what God is doing all around us. The mantra, where the Church is, there is Christ, gives way to where Christ is, there is the Church. God's gracious presence brings out joy in every moment, and in Christ we experience a vigorous fellowship with God and others in all of life. Bedrock draws on the Bible and Christian theology to reflect on Jesus Christ as bedrock for a Church on the move.

Ending With Hope

by Beth Ann Gaede, Ending With Hope Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Ending With Hope books, Why is it we do funerals so well but often balk at even recognizing the death of a congregation? Couldn't we do grief ministry and funerals as well for social groups as we do for individuals?" challenges Gilson Waldkoenig, in his seminary classes. Waldkoenig, associate professor of church in society at Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg, contributes his special insights on the subject of church endings, in this unique and important book. Ending with Hope grows out of the understanding that although closing a congregation is in many ways about dying, it can also be about new life. Closing a congregation does not have to be about failure but can be about redirecting resources for new ministry. Contributors represent eight denominations and include more than a dozen pastors, lay leaders, judicatory staff, and others who have "been there"—who have helped congregations through the painful closing process. Resources include models for assessing whether a congregation should close; reflections on members' and pastors' experiences during closing; case studies; guidance for deciding what to do with a building; suggestions for selecting and preserving documents and artifacts; rituals for healthy closings; a survey of historical trends regarding closings; and other helpful materials.

Grace For The Injured Self

by Terry D. Cooper, Grace For The Injured Self Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Grace For The Injured Self books, Even under the best circumstances in life, we all suffer psychological injuries to our self. These injuries from others can range from passive hurtful comments to intentional abusive assaults. The end result is that our sense of being a cohesive and secure self is threatened. We may begin to experience degrees of vulnerability and self-doubts, or of rage and desire for revenge. We may even feel as if we were "falling apart." In all cases these self-injuries chip away at our self-cohesion and self-esteem. Grace for the Injured Self helps us to better understand the significance of these injuries to our self, as well as how these injuries can be healed through the self psychology approach of Heinz Kohut. Throughout its pages, this book emphasizes the empathic presence of another as a source of grace. Empathy is the most powerful means by which the self is reassured, strengthened, and ultimately restored. It is this empathic responsiveness of others that holds our self together and helps us daily maintain our self-cohesion and self-esteem. The self psychology perspective of Heinz Kohut, who many consider the most significant psychoanalyst since Sigmund Freud, is made available here as a primary means by which clergy and other helping professionals can provide a healing context for the restoration of injured selves.
