The Culture Bound Syndromes

by Ronald C. Simons, The Culture Bound Syndromes Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download The Culture Bound Syndromes books, In the last few years there has been a great revival of interest in culture-bound psychiatric syndromes. A spate of new papers has been published on well known and less familiar syndromes, and there have been a number of attempts to put some order into the field of inquiry. In a review of the literature on culture-bound syndromes up to 1969 Yap made certain suggestions for organizing thinking about them which for the most part have not received general acceptance (see Carr, this volume, p. 199). Through the seventies new descriptive and conceptual work was scarce, but in the last few years books and papers discussing the field were authored or edited by Tseng and McDermott (1981), AI-Issa (1982), Friedman and Faguet (1982) and Murphy (1982). In 1983 Favazza summarized his understanding of the state of current thinking for the fourth edition of the Comprehensive Textbook of Psychiatry, and a symposium on culture-bound syndromes was organized by Kenny for the Eighth International Congress of Anthropology and Ethnology. The strong est impression to emerge from all this recent work is that there is no substantive consensus, and that the very concept, "culture-bound syndrome" could well use some serious reconsideration. As the role of culture-specific beliefs and prac tices in all affliction has come to be increasingly recognized it has become less and less clear what sets the culture-bound syndromes apart.

Revelations Of An Ugly Old Hag

by Dolly Delanty, Revelations Of An Ugly Old Hag Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Revelations Of An Ugly Old Hag books, Theses vignettes, written in satire, describe the happenings taking place in a retirement home and in Australia. The author herself presently resides in a senior’s residence. She hopes that it is recognized by the readers—if there are any—that these essays (or whatever you want to call them) are written tongue-in-cheek and are not to be taken too seriously. The author, Dolly Delanty, has enjoyed every minute writing this book. In other words, she has had a hell of a good time being crass and rude. It has been very liberating for her. She thinks more people should do it! This book takes you to a retirement residence situated somewhere in North America and to the southern coast of Australia. The author talks about the weird fellow seniors she meets along the way. She talks about her strained relationship with her daughter’s Aussie husband and relates funny situations presented to her by the in-laws from hell. It’s light reading and fun as well. All that is required is an open mind and a sick sense of humor.

by Edward Butts, Ghost Stories Of Newfoundland And Labrador Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Ghost Stories Of Newfoundland And Labrador books, Shrouded in the mists of history and legend, the province of Newfoundland and Labrador is a land of mysteries. Its waters are a graveyard for countless wrecked ships. Its lore is full of tales about treachery and murder. And it was once the haunt of pirates. Haunt, indeed! Newfoundland and Labrador has tales of the supernatural that date back centuries, to a time before Canada even existed as a nation. Here the ghosts not only lurk in old houses and forlorn cemeteries, they come up out of the sea to walk the decks of ships before the eyes of terrified crewmen. They lament out on the ice where seventy-seven men perished in the Newfoundland Sealing Disaster of 1914. And in St. Johns the courthouse is said to be haunted by the ghost of Catherine Snow, who was hanged in 1834 for the murder of her husband. Here we find tales, both personal and historical, of ghostly haunting and unexplained happenings; from the Old Hag to headless ghosts. So read on if you dare!
