The Nun S Story Of Gabriel S Marriage

by Wilkie Collins, The Nun S Story Of Gabriel S Marriage Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download The Nun S Story Of Gabriel S Marriage books, This early work by Wilkie Collins was originally published in 1853. Born in Marylebone, London in 1824, Collins' family enrolled him at the Maida Hill Academy in 1835, but then took him to France and Italy with them between 1836 and 1838. Returning to England, Collins attended Cole's boarding school, and completed his education in 1841, after which he was apprenticed to the tea merchants Antrobus & Co. in the Strand. In 1846, Collins became a law student at Lincoln's Inn, and was called to the bar in 1851, although he never practiced. It was in 1848, a year after the death of his father, that he published his first book, The Memoirs of the Life of William Collins, Esq., R.A., to good reviews. The 1860s saw Collins' creative high-point, and it was during this decade that he achieved fame and critical acclaim, with his four major novels, The Woman in White (1860), No Name (1862), Armadale (1866) and The Moonstone (1868). The Moonstone, meanwhile is seen by many as the first true detective novel – T. S. Eliot called it "the first, the longest, and the best of modern English detective novels...in a genre invented by Collins and not by Poe.” Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900's and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. We are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions.

One Nun S Story

by Mary Jane Masterson, One Nun S Story Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download One Nun S Story books, "This is my sister. We're in the same religious congregation. She's got a fantastic story to tell about God's unfurling grace in her life as a nun. Not just for a decade or so—sixty years!—told simply, honestly from the heart. As the Spirit urged St. Augustine, I urge you: 'take and read.'" —Sister Helen Prejean, csj, author of Dead Man Walking "The unsung heroes of the Catholic Church in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, religious sisters, have stories to tell—stories that are moving, inspiring, brave, funny, and encouraging. These unsung heroes' stories remain mostly untold, but not all. Sister Mary Jane Masterson tells her story with wit, humility, and honesty. It is a story of grace-enfleshed." —Rev. Donald Cozzens, author of Freeing Celibacy At the age of five, Mary Jane Masterson's destiny was foretold by a stranger. "That one," said the Brother of Holy Cross, pointing at Mary Jane as he sat comfortably in their living room with her mother, "will be a nun." His prediction, repeated in later years by other friends and acquaintances, became reality when, in 1946 at the age of eighteen, Mary Jane joined the Sisters of St. Joseph and became a "bride of Christ." She adapted quickly to religious life, sharing prayer and living quarters with other nuns, an "elitist group" considered by many in the secular world to have far more than secular access to God's love, a belief encouraged by Vatican I. But as the Second Vatican Council came to a close in 1965, a shift in theology shook Sister Mary Jane to her very core. Had she sacrificed marriage, sex, and children of her own for nothing? Follow Sister Mary Jane on her journey from her calling to the noblest of vocations to her acceptance of how, as a nun, she could affect the world beyond her community and her school.

The Tulip And The Pope

by Deborah Larsen, The Tulip And The Pope Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download The Tulip And The Pope books, The story of novelist and poet Deborah Larsen's young womanhood, The Tulip and the Pope is both an exquisitely crafted spiritual memoir and a beautifully nuanced view of life in the convent. In midsummer of 1960, nineteen-year-old Deborah shares a cab to a convent. She and the teenage girls with her, passionate to become nuns, heedless of all they are leaving behind, smoke their last cigarettes before entering their new lives. In the same artful prose that distinguished her novel The White, Larsen's memoir lets us into the hushed life of the convent. She captures the exquisite peace she found there, as well as the extreme constriction of the rules and her gradual awareness of all that she is missing. Eventually the physical world—the lush tulip she remembers seeing as a girl, the snow she tunneled in, and even the mystery of sex—begins to seem to her an alternative theater for a deep understanding and love of God.

Gus

by Patricia Nolan Savas, Gus Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Gus books, What really goes on behind convent walls? Learn the secrets of life in a Catholic convent as author Patricia Nolan Savas recounts the fascinating, true story of her ten years as Sister Augusta ("GUS"), a Sister of Charity. This is a compassionate, often heartbreaking, sometimes humorous retelling of the author's search for love, acceptance & closeness with God. In vivid, spell-binding prose she recounts the petty rivalries, infighting, jealousy, sexual intrigue, trauma, & physical & mental breakdowns that resulted from women living in close quarters & striving for perfection. Eventually, everything took its toll. As she relates: "...the suffocating blackness had become quicksand & I was sinking." In desperation she left the convent a broken woman, only to come face to face with further hardships in trying to adjust to a world that was now foreign to her. But the book doesn't end there. This is a story of tenacious hope triumphing over pain, fulfilling the promise offered by Dr. Robert C. Frost in his foreword: "For those whose lives are empty, lonely & strangely sad, take courage-- for this is a true story which ends with a happy beginning."
